Seventeen-year-old Aaron Kelly was voted off the May 5 American Idol elimination show, revealing the Season 9 top four contestants.
This week, Harry Connick Jr. mentored the top 5 contestants, each singing a Frank Sinatra classic. Connick not only mentored, but he handled the arrangements of the contestants songs and actually played in their performances.
Aaron Kelly sang “Fly Me to the Moon,” which did not impress the judges. The judges were also not impressed with Casey James’ “Blue Skies” or Crystal Bowersox’s rendition of “Summer Wind.” They highly praised Michael Lynche who sang “The Way You Look Tonight” and Lee DeWyze with “That’s Life.” Surprisingly, Micheal’s performance didn’t keep him out of the bottom two.
Many were surprised by the bottom two, as it was predicted that Casey James would go home this week. Randy Jackson said this was his “worst performance” this week.
After Casey performed Connick told him, “I think you sang it better in rehearsal, to be honest. You killed it about two hours ago – but that’s not going to help you now!”
Many enjoyed the humor of Harry Connick Jr., as the contestants said he helped lighten the mood.
“It’s been an honor for me to be on American Idol and to share this time with you straight judges, with the exception of Ellen, and I have really had a marvelous, marvelous time,” Harry Connick Jr. said jokingly, of which Ellen took no offense.
Lady Gaga performed “Alejandro” wearing what appeared to be lingerie and fishnet. Harry Connick Jr. sang his version of the Lennon/McCartney classic “And I Love Her,” from his new album of covers “Your Songs.”
Big Mike gave Aaron a big bear hug and offered some words of encouragement once the verdict was delivered.
“I had a blast,” Aaron Kelly told Ryan Seacrest after hearing he had been eliminated.
Check out Aaron Kelly’s performance of “Fly Me to the Moon” from Tuesday night.
The final four to perform next Tuesday, May 11 are Crystal Bowersox, Lee DeWyze, Casey James and Michael Lynche.
Next week’s theme is “Songs of the Cinema” with mentor Jamie Foxx.
