US captain Carlos Bocanegra, who missed the end of his European club season with strained abdominal muscles, did start in the US vs England game Saturday.

“It was a difficult game,” Gerrard said. “I think the important thing in the first game is not to lose. Unfortunately we’ve let a poor goal in and we couldn’t go on and get the winner.

“The goal shocked us a bit. … It took us a while to get over it.”

“I think when you play at the highest level and against the best competition, it will bring the best out of you,” US goalie Tim Howard said.

The 2010 US World Cup team starters consisted of Tim Howard, Oguchi Onyewu, Jay DeMerit, Carlos Bocanegra, Steve Cherundolo, Ricardo Clark, Michael Bradley, Clint Dempsey, Landon Donovan, Jozy Altidore and Robbie Findley.

The 2010 England World Cup team starters Robert Green, John Terry, Ledley King, Ashley Cole, Glen Johnson, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, James Milner, Aaron Lennon, Wayne Rooney and Emile Heskey.
