The FIFA World Cup 2010 continued Tuesday, June 22 in South Africa. June 22 matches included Mexico vs Uruguay, France vs South Africa, Nigeria vs South Korea and Greece vs Argentina.
Uruguay beat Mexico 1-0. Despite Mexico’s loss, they will still advance to the next round. Uruguay wins group A.
Luis Suárez made the one goal for Uruguay.
“We knew we had two results that benefited us,” said Luis Suárez of Uruguay. “But before the match our goal was to get the three points and be group leaders.
“Luckily we reached our first goal, which was to advance from the first round.”
South Africa won, beating France 2-1, but the victory was bittersweet. Neither team is advancing to the next round. This makes South Africa the first host nation knocked out in group stage of the World Cup.
Florent Malouda made the one goal for France. Bongani Khumalo and Katlego Mphela made the two goals for South Africa.
“The fighting spirit was there,” said Katlego Mphela of South Africa. “It’s a bit unfortunate, but we beat France in the World Cup.”
South Korea and Nigeria tied, 2-2.
South Korea’s two goals were scored by Lee Jung-Soo and Park Chu-Young. Nigeria’s goals were scored by Kalu Uche and Yakubu Aiyegbeni.
“Our goal was to reach the last 16. We succeeded in doing this for the first time away from home,” South Korea captain Park Ji-sung said. “So I’m very happy we accomplished this in South Africa. All of the players know how important this is.”
Argentina beat Greece, winning 2-0, and winning group B.
Martín Demichelis and Martín Palermo scored the two goals for Argentina, allowing them to advance to Stage 2.
“A well-deserved victory, no doubt about that,” Greece coach Otto Rehhagel said. “We wanted to avoid an early goal, we managed to do that, but of course Argentina has more class and that earned them the win.”
Wednesday, June 23 matches of the 2010 World Cup include Slovenia vs England, United States vs Algeria, Ghana vs Germany and Australia vs Serbia.
