World Cup 2010: Paraguay and Spain Win

The 2010 FIFA World Cup continued on Tuesday, June 29 in South Africa. Stage 2 matches included Paraguay vs Japan and Spain vs Portugal.

Paraguay beat Japan with a 5-3 shoot out win after the game had finished with a 0-0 draw.

Oscar Cardozo scored the 5 goals for Paraguay in the shoot out. Yuichi Komano made only 3 goals for Japan, missing his third shot.

“We practiced penalty kicks once, so nobody could say we weren’t prepared,” coach Gerardo Martino said. “But our executions weren’t too good.

“You can’t recreate the environment you’ll face in a real game, with 40,000 fans.”

“Character plays a big role,” Martino said. “What can you say when a Cardozo asks to kick the fifth penalty and he does it the way he did it?”

Spain won, beating Portugal 1-0.

David Villa made the only goal of the game for Spain.

“It was one of my best goals because it got us through to the next round,” Villa said. “Keep scoring so we can keep going.”

Paraguay and Spain will play against each other in the quarterfinals on Saturday, July 3.

The 2010 FIFA World Cup Quarterfinals match ups also include Netherlands vs Brazil and Uruguay vs Ghana on July 2 and Argentina vs Germany on July 3.
