The 2010 FIFA World Cup continued Friday, July 2 in South Africa with the first two games of the quarterfinals. Matches included Netherlands vs Brazil and Uruguay vs Ghana.
Netherlands won, beating favored Brazil 2-1.
Felipe Melo and Wesley Sneijder scored the two goals for the Netherlands. Robinho scored the one goal for Brazil.
“For 45 minutes we went full throttle,” said Wesley Sneijder of the Netherlands. “We were rewarded.”
“It just slipped through from my bald head and it was a great feeling,” Sneijder said.
“I’m devastated. It was hard to see the players crying back there,” Brazil player Felipe Melo said after emerging from the locker room.
“I have to apologize to the Brazilian fans. I came here thinking about giving Brazil the title, but I’m a human being. Everybody can make mistakes.”
Uruguay won, beating Ghana in a shootout after the game ended tied at 1-1. Uruguay won the shootout 4-2.
Diego Forlán scored the one goal for Uruguay in regular time and Sulley Muntari scored the one goal for Ghana in regular time. Sebastian Abreu scored the 4 goals in the shootout for Uruguay and Asamoah Gyan scored the 2 goals in the shootout for Ghana.
This win sent the South Americans into the World Cup semifinals for the first time in 40 years and sent the final African team in 2010 World Cup home.
Uruguay will play Netherlands in the 2010 FIFA World Cup semifinals on Tuesday, July 6 at 2:30 p.m. EST.
Saturday, July 3 2010 World Cup quarterfinals matches include Argentina vs Germany and Paraguay vs Spain.
