Apple CEO Steve Jobs held a press conference Friday, July 16, at Apple headquarters in Cupertino, CA, to address the antennae issues with the new iPhone 4.0. It was here Jobs announced that all iPhone 4.0 owners will received a free bumper case, which reduces interference with the reception.
Steve Jobs didn’t apologize for the reception issue or announce a permanent fix. He instead spent time defending the iPhone 4.0 and Apple, showing examples of similar reception issues with other smart phones such as the Blackberry Bold 9700. Steve Jobs wanted to make it clear that the iPhone 4.0 is not the only smart phone with reception problems.
“We’re not perfect; phones aren’t perfect,” Jobs said. “We want to make all our users happy.”
His solution is giving all iPhone 4.0 owners a free bumper case, which retails for $29.99. The reception issue occurs when the user touches a certain spot on the metal band around the edge of the phone which leads to interference. This bumper will reduce the amount of interference and consequently improve reception. Those who already purchased an iPhone bumper case will receive a refund.
Steve Jobs also said the iPhone 4.0 has sold more than 3 million units and has been the most successful product launch in Apple history. Despite the reception issue, he says the iPhone 4.0 remains “our best product ever.”
“It’s not like Apple has had its head in the sand on this,” Jobs said. “It’s only been 22 days.”
“We care about every user,” he added. “We’re not going to stop until every user is happy.”
Jobs did acknowledge that the iPhone 4.0 drops more calls than the 3GS, but claimed the difference is less than one call per 100.
He went on to say that returns of the iPhone 4.0, which have been 1.7 percent, have been lower than those for the 6 percent return rate for the previous generation iPhone 3GS.
