Megachurch pastor Rick Warren was hospitalized Monday after his eyes were burned while pruning a firestick plant in his yard.
Popular pastor Warren was taken to the Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo after the incident where he stayed overnight. Warren was released from the hospital Tuesday. According to Warren’s spokesman, A. Larry Ross, Warren suffered a chemical burn to the cornea, which caused temporary impairment of his vision. Warren’s vision had since improved, and although he was still experiencing some discomfort, “doctors expect a full recovery,” Ross said.
Ross said Warren was pruning two large firestick plants in the backyard of his Southern California home Monday when the incident happened. Warren removed his gloves, wiped his brow and both eyes immediately started to burn.
The firestick plant has a milky white sap that can cause temporary blindness.
“My eyes were severely burned by a toxic poison,” Warren wrote via Twitter Thursday morning. “Hospitalized Mon. Excruciating pain. Now home. Pray my sight loss is restored.”
Three hours later he wrote, “Thank you for prayers for my eyes. Another doctor visit this PM. May God use this pain for His Glory. Rom.8:28″
Thursday afternoon he confirmed that he could see via Twitter, writing, “A doctor put protective contacts on my corneas as bandages during the healing. I am NOT blind. Thank you.”
Rick Warren, 56, is the author of the multimillion-selling book Purpose Driven Life and is the founder of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest in Orange County.
