The rumors about Haiti native Wyclef Jean running for president of Haiti are expected to be confirmed through an exclusive announcement by Wyclef on Larry King Live tonight.
37-year-old Wyclef Jean, now Grammy-winning hip-hop artist, was born in Haiti. He has expressed a strong desire over the years to help Haiti and founded the charity Yéele Haiti in 2005.
Jean told CNN last month that he had filled out the necessary paperwork to make a run for president in Haiti. Haiti’s new president will be chosen in elections happening on November 28 and the winner is expected to be sworn in on February 7, 2011.
In order to run for president, Jean would have to prove he has resided in Haiti for five consecutive years, owns property in the country and has never been a citizen of any other country than Haiti; it was unclear if he fits all the criteria.
Wyclef Jean told People, “The suffering of the people of Haiti, the youth of Haiti – which is the majority of the population – can’t take another five years of the corruption that’s been going on for the past 200 years. This is why I’m running.”
He also told Time, “The quake drove home to me that Haiti can’t wait another 10 years for us to bring it into the 21st century.”
The August 5th episode of Larry King Live with Wyclef Jean will begin at 9p.m. EST.
