President Barack Obama and NBA stars such as LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Carmelo Anthony got together to play a game of basketball for wounded troops at Washington’s Fort McNair on Sunday, August 8.
Some of the current NBA stars that participated included LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, Grant Hill, Derek Fisher, Chris Paul, Chauncey Billups, Derek Rose and Joakim Noah. The confirmed retired NBA stars that participated were Bill Russell and Magic Johnson. Kobe Bryant was present but did not play.
Reporters were not allowed inside the gym to cover the game, so the number of people that got to see the game was very limited since there was no media coverage. When asked why this was, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said Obama “just wanted to play.”
After the game some of the players joined Obama and a group of his friends for a barbecue at the White House, to finish off the president’s 49th birthday week.
Although Obama’s family was away for his birthday, it appears he had more than enough fun without them. Michelle Obama and daughter Sasha, 9, arrived back in D.C. on Sunday just in time for the barbecue, returning from their 5 day vacation in Spain. The Obamas’ elder daughter, Malia, 12, is still away at summer camp.
Very little information was released about the game, so it is unknown how the teams were divided up or if score was kept.
