Steve Carell has announced that it is time for him to move on from his role of Michael Scott in the hit sitcom The Office. This leaves the Dunder Mifflin boss position open, and everyone wants to know who will be his replacement.
The talks of potential replacements began with Danny McBride (HBO’s Eastbound & Down) and Rhys Darby (HBO’s Flight of the Conchords).
New rumors say that Michael Emerson, who played Ben Linus on Lost, could be considered for Steve Carell’s old role.
“I saw it mentioned… Sometimes I look at Google alerts and I saw that people were talking about that and I thought, ‘That’s just some rabid fan of mine trying to start something,’” Emerson said about the rumors. “I didn’t take it seriously. I’m sure there are much bigger and more experienced names in a pool for a job like that.”
“We haven’t settled exactly who will take over,” says Paul Lieberstein, the Executive Producer of The Office (who also plays Toby on the show). Lieberstein added that promoting a current staffer to the top job remains a viable option as well.
Dwight Schrute, played by Rainn Wilson, seemed to be the most likely candidate to be promoted to his dream job as the manager at Dunder Mifflin.
“I’d love to see Rainn Wilson in that position,” Mindy Kaling said last month. Kaling, who is the co-executive producer and plays Kelly Kapoor on The Office continued saying, “Dwight has become so nuanced – you actually care about him now. I think if [we did a good job laying the groundwork] this coming season, he would be a fantastic boss.”
