Will Forte will not be returning for the 36th season of Saturday Night Live, ending his 8 year career on the sketch comedy show.

It is said that he is departing on good terms, and is leaving to pursue other career opportunities. It is unknown what these other opportunities might be.

Forte’s publicist Lewis Kay said Forte was “eternally grateful” to producer Lorne Michaels and to “all the incredible people he worked with over the years.”

Will Forte joined Saturday Night Live in 2002, is best known for his portrayal of offbeat characters, including political candidate Tim Calhoun, opposite tribute band frontman Jon Bovi, ESPN Classic commentator Greg Stink, businessman-turned-hermit The Falconer and amateur adventurer MacGruber.

The new season of Saturday Night Live begins September 25 at 11:30/10:30c on NBC.
