The Stars ‘Stand Up 2 Cancer’
The Stand Up 2 Cancer (SU2C) telecast featured a lineup of stars that hoped to encourage donations for collaborative cancer research.
“Cancer doesn’t discriminate,” this program’s motto certainly rings true. Celebrities expressed how they also lost loved ones to disease at last night’s telecast.
The A-list lineup included Adam Sandler, Reese Witherspoon, Seth Rogen, Diane Lane, Mandy Moore, Gwyneth Paltrow, Neil Diamond, Cindy Crawford, Denzel Washington, and Renee Zellweger. The celebrities participated hoping to illustrate how cancer is truly widespread and affects everyone in one way or another. They spoke about their own battles, or the battle of their loved ones, as they encouraged viewers to donate.
Michael Douglas, the latest star to battle with cancer, had an opening taped message for the telecast. Other memorable moments included Patrick Swayze’s taped address to SU2C, which was introduced by his widow, Lisa Niemi. Niemi said, “Patrick appeared on the first Stand Up 2 Cancer show and bravely talked for the first time in public about his own battle with pancreatic cancer. It is a moment I will not soon forget. It is up to all of us who loved Patrick to stand up to cancer. Please donate for all of those in the fight and in his memory.”
Stevie Wonder performed “With You I’m Born Again” with singer Natasha Bedingfield, and dedicated the song to his late wife, a breast cancer victim. “At some point in time cancer has touched someone in our lives. It is that unmistakable line… ‘I have cancer’. I know this because I lost someone very special – a friend, sister-like, my first wife Syreeta to breast cancer. We must stand up to cancer and beat it back and beat it out of existence. We can and we will. Let’s join together and do this,” Wonder said, before he performed.
Kelly Osbourne, Marg Helgenberger, and Vanessa Hudgens were among the celebrities that worked the phones at the Culver City, California studio headquarters for the telecast.
The one-hour, commercial-free telecast aired last night on ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, Discovery Health, E!, G4, HBO, HBO Latino, MLB Network, Showtime, The Style Network and TV One and over 30 online streaming partners like AOL, Yahoo! and YouTube.
