September 11th 2010 – Director and star, Ben Affleck, introduced The Town at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) tonight.
I got the chance to attend TIFF’s North American premiere of The Town. Director and star of the film, Ben Affleck attended along with his wife, Jennifer Garner, and cast members, Jon Hamm, Blake Lively, Chris Cooper, and Jeremy Renner.
The film debuted at Toronto’s Roy Thomson Hall, where the stars also walked the red carpet prior to the film’s screening. Hundreds of fans stood in line to ensure a good seat inside the theater, while others waited by the red carpet, hoping to catch a glimpse of the celebrities.
Affleck briefly walked the red carpet along with Garner, until she left his side to graciously greet fans along the carpet’s perimeter. (My cousin next to me was ecstatic to have Garner sign her ticket.)
Once the audience was seated, TIFF co-director, Cameron Bailey, introduced Affleck and his cast. Renner, Lively, Hamm, and Cooper, first walked the stage, followed by Affleck. Affleck took to the podium to introduce his film.
After thanking his cast and crew, Affleck said he was happy to have the chance to make this film, which is based on Chuck Hogan’s novel, Prince of Thieves. He admitted that his career hasn’t always been a smooth one. “I’ve had some ups and downs in my career,” Affleck said, after he joked that his previous project, Gone Baby Gone, “didn’t catch Hollywood on fire.”
Of course, Affleck concluded his speech by thanking Garner, “I would like to thank the person who made this at all possible for me to be here, who makes all things possible in my life. There would be no movie without this person, and there would be no me without this person. My wife is here…I love you.”
The audience applauded and cheered as Affleck and the rest of the cast left the stage and were seated to watch the film, which is set to hit theaters on September 17th.
Eager applause broke out as soon as the credits rolled. The hundreds of flashing cameras provided a makeshift spotlight to the center of the theater, where Affleck, Garner, and the rest of the cast were seated.
It was definitely well deserved applause. Click here to read my full review of The Town!
