Rooney Mara, who’s in the highly-anticipated movie The Social Network out in theaters October 1st, landed the highly coveted and complex leading role as Lisbeth Salander in the American remake of the thriller The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Stieg Larsson’s international best seller The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo will be released in December 2011 as an American remake, and unknown actress Rooney Mara was director David Fincher’s first choice. David Fincher is also who directed the Facebook movie, The Social Network. Rooney’s had minor roles in Youth in Revolt and A Nightmare on Elm Street, and she is also the younger sister of Entourage actress Kate Mara.
Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly describes Fincher’s casting of character Lisbeth Salander as a “role-of-the-century Cinderella event” and believes that with the correct intensity, “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has the chance to be a prestige crossover thriller on the order of The Silence of the Lambs.” He anticipates that this film could be “a fashion revolution” as well.
According to Star magazine, “Rooney gets her first name from her mother’s side of the family, the Rooneys, who own the Pittsburgh Steelers,” and her dad’s side of the family own the New York Giants. Roony said, “Football is the glue that holds my family together!”
The genius behind the award-winning novel The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo never got to see his work published nor turned into a film that has reached audiences and critics internationally. The Journalist and Swedish author, Stieg Larsson, died in November 2004 leaving behind The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, the first of the Millennium trilogy, that would thereafter become a global best-seller, movie and American remake.
