In light of the recent youth suicides, Tim Gunn has admitted that he attempted suicide himself when he was a teenager. Gunn reveals this in a video message that was released today and said to be taped for The Trevor Project, an organization focused on suicide prevention among gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth.
In the video, Gunn says he tried to take his own life when he was 17-years-old by taking 100 pills.
“I woke up the morning after taking over a hundred pills and I was in a whole other level of despair. I thought, ‘I shouldn’t be here. This isn’t what was meant to be.’ I frankly just wanted to start life all over again.”
“As a 17-year-old youth who was in quite a bit of despair, I attempted to kill myself and I’m very happy today that that attempt was unsuccessful, but at the time it’s all that I could contemplate,” says Gunn, who is now the host of the hit show Project Runway.
“There are people who can help you. You cannot do this alone… It gets better, it really does.”
Kudos to Tim Gunn for admitting such a dark secret in hopes of saving the youth.
