The film is based on the novel, Team of Rivals by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Doris Kearns Goodwin. The biography is adapted into a screenplay by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner.

DreamWorks released a statement that said the film will probably focus on “the political collision of Lincoln and the powerful men of his cabinet on the road to abolition [of slavery] and the end of the Civil War.”

Liam Neeson was supposed to play the role of Lincoln, but dropped out in August, causing the film’s future to be in doubt.

The filming of the biopic is set to begin in the fall of 2011, and be released a year later (Fall 2012).
