Renner, 39, who recently starred in The Town, was cast in the upcoming Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and he might be taking over for Tom Cruise.

“It’s a franchise to potentially take over. I can’t predict the future and what they want, but that’s certainly the idea,” Renner told MTV News.

He wouldn’t say more on whether he’ll take over in Ghost Protocol or a future Mission: Impossible film.

“I can’t really go into the details of the script, because that’s still evolving. It’s Tom’s baby. He’s the engine behind the thing. What happens after that, we’ll see,” Renner said.

Ghost Protocol is due out December 2011.

What do you fans think? Is it time for Tom Cruise to hand the torch over?
