Fox’s uber popular television series Glee has taken over cable, iPods and even now work outs? Sara Haines, a correspondent for NBC’s Today Show, sat down with co-hosts Kathie Lee and Hoda for an excerpt on fitness trends and how Glee hits have made it into the gym.
For Sara, Glee singing and dancing at the Union Square Crunch gym in New York City distracted her from the calories she was burning.
“The class is called Glee Club, and it’s all about singing and dancing, getting your heart rate up, burning calories.” Glee Club fitness instructor and self-proclaimed Gleek Marc Santa Maria tells Sara.
“It’s all about having a good time and combining the singing and dancing,” added Glee Club fitness instructor Carol Johnson who lead a Glee class to Glee’s “My Life Would Suck Without You.”
“And that’s where the calorie burn comes in – because there’s constant movement, easy, fun to follow dances, and that’s where you can’t think about it. You end up just burning those calories,” Marc said.
The Today Show’s Sara asked, “is anything gonna hurt tomorrow?”
“Hopefully not your vocal cords. If you just breathe right, the vocal cords will still be safe,” Marc said.
The high-energy dance and Vocal Adrenaline workout has been burning calories for fitness-minded Gleeks since this past fall. In the midst of holiday indulgence and holiday sweets, Glee Club is the perfect work out for fans in the Big Apple who want to keep the scale at bay.
The Wellness + Wire NYC blog describes the class as ”stylized dancing with Hip Hop and Broadway flair.”
Carol Johnson blogged for Crunch explaining that, “The only requirement for this class is to bring an open heart, a bit of cheesiness, and lots of love – no need to know how to sing and dance, just know that you will sing and dance.”
The Glee class is at 5:30 PM at Union Square in New York. Carol also occasionally teaches the class at 6:30 PM at Kips Bay.
