Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling, who star in Blue Valentine, found themselves competing to see who could gain more weight for their roles.

The film’s director, Derek Cianfrance, told People, “She ended up winning. She gained about 15, 16 pounds. He gained 14. Michelle was eating a pint of ice cream for breakfast and dinner and avocado sandwiches all day. She wanted to do it. She talked about her character having a certain self-hatred.”

The film is about a married couple that sees their marriage falling apart. The initial plan was to have Williams get thinner, but the actress, 30, envisioned something else.

Cianfrance said Williams asked him, ” ‘I don’t know about losing weight. What about if I gained some weight?’” To which he replied, “Surprise me.”

The best part of Williams’ diet was the ice cream. “She ate that [Purely] Decadent stuff made with coconut milk. Supposedly the coconut milk, the oil, has a lot of fat in it, and it’s hard for your body to break it down,” Cianfrance said.

Getting paid to eat ice cream sounds like a good deal to me!
