Justin Bieber was scheduled to perform on a German variety show Saturday, but his performance was canceled after a guest on the show was critically injured during the broadcast.
The injured guest on the German TV show Wetten, dass…? (Wanna Bet?) was 23-year-old Samuel Koch. Koch was attempting to jump over his father’s speeding car on special spring-powered stilt shoes. He failed to make it fully over the approaching vehicle, hitting the windshield and plummeting to the ground face first in front of a live studio audience. Koch sustained serious back and spinal injuries and was rushed to the hospital. He was put in a medically induced coma and underwent surgery Sunday. Koch’s injuries were said to be life-threatening, with a German newspaper quoting a doctor as saying Koch was “in an extremely critical stage.”
The rest of the show was canceled after the incident, which included a performance by Justin Bieber and appearances by Cameron Diaz and Christoph Waltz.
After the accident, Bieber tweeted, “Please pray for Samuel Koch & his family as we wait and hope for his health and safety.”
Bieber later added, “Germany I’m sorry we couldn’t perform tonight but some things are more important than putting on a show. We will be back I promise. Thank u.”
Wetten, dass…? has been on the air for 29 years and this is apparently the first and only serious accident in its history.
