Christian Bale had to lose weight for his role in Mark Wahlberg’s boxing drama The Fighter.
In The Fighter, Bale, 35, plays Wahlberg’s half-brother in, a former boxer turned crack addict. He becomes a boxing trainer for his brother in the movie based on a true story
“I’ve had to lose a great deal of weight because he [the character] was a welterweight,” Bale told MTV.
Previously, Bale got down to 121 pounds, losing 63 pounds for his role in The Machinist. He apparently did so by living on coffee and apples. This time, Bale lost the weight by running.
“[I] was just running like crazy. I could run four hours on end and I felt really healthy,” Bale told the Latino Review.
Apparently Bale’s skinny look in The Machinist caught Eminem’s attention as the hip-hop star told Complex magazine he wanted to look that thin for a video.
Bale, however, doesn’t think it’s a good idea. “Holy crap, that guy needs help in that case! ‘Don’t do it, don’t do it,’ I’d tell him,” Bale insisted to MTV.
Even though losing that much weight wasn’t healthy, Bale shared that there were some good things to come out of it.
“I was the calmest mentally that I’ve ever been in my life,’ he says. ‘You just go beyond any bodily needs. Your energy gets to such a low point that it all just becomes mental. You felt like some sort of guru that could go sit on top of a mountain,” he shared.
“Mentally, it does wonders, but I would never sacrifice the joys, the ups and the downs, the roller coaster of life for that calmness. I’d rather be getting in there, getting involved and having it a bit more raw than that.”
Catch Bale and Wahlberg in The Fighter, hitting theaters on December 17th.
