After a tumultuous and public separation with his estranged wife Courtney Cox, actor David Arquette has checked into rehab for alcohol and depression issues.
“I really admire David and his choice to take charge and better his life,” 46-year-old Cox, star of Cougar Town, tells PEOPLE. “I love and support him.”
The couple made headlines in October when they decided to separate over marital problems and extramarital affairs.
A source says, “He’s just not handling this situation well. He’s really depressed.”
During the holidays, Arquette told Howard Stern on his radio show that his psychologist believes he’s having a “nervous breakdown.”
“I’ve been drinking a lot because I’m heartbroken. It’s really a personal, traumatic thing,” Arquette said. “Everybody’s worried and concerned about me. When I drink, I become a maniac.”
He added that the separation from his wife “is hardest thing anyone has to go through.”
“[Courteney] said she doesn’t want to be my mother,” Arquette said. “I kind of need a mother right now. I need a girl to come bring me some soup and make sure I’m all right. I like that, and I take care of my ladies, too.”
The Scream actor revealed that he’s going through a mid-life crises and is lonely – in need of love in his life. For Arquette, he hit rock bottom during a recent Christmas party hosted by Adam Sandler when he called Tom Cruise “Sean” because he “was a little wasted.” Embarrassed, Arquette said he had planned on sobering up and not drinking for a long time.
Cox and Arquette have a 6-year-old daughter, Coco. Arquette expressed that he’d love to have more kids, except preferably with his ex-girlfriend Drew Barrymore, “from a pure breeding standpoint.” Cox and Arquette are not officially divorcing just yet; however, a reconciliation is most unlikely for the future.
