Country Strong, a drama starring Gwyneth Paltrow, opens in theaters nationwide Friday, January 27, 2011.
Country Strong is a story about a rising young singer-songwriter who gets involved with a fallen, emotionally unstable country star. The pair embarks on a career resurrection tour helmed by her husband/manager and featuring a beauty-queen-turned-singer. Between concerts, romantic entanglements and old demons threaten to derail them all.
The cast of Country Strong includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Tim McGraw, Garrett Hedlund, Leighton Meester and Marshall Chapman.
Country Strong received some negative criticism from the critics.
“Several good performances are left adrift, as the characters roam from scene to scene, singing (quite well) as they go. Even as a sort of long-form music video, it’s disjointed.” -Bill Goodykoontz, Arizona Republic
“Most of the effort seems to have gone into the original music, which is pleasant but not memorable, and too little on creating believable, multidimensional characters.” -Claudia Puig, USA Today
“It shows that Gwyneth knows the spangly high-powered joys of country music. Too bad that in Country Strong, she’s too busy acting out the hysterical and mostly nonsensical sorrows.” -Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly
Even though the critics were less than pleased with the characters and plot, the singing and music may make it worth going to see.
