Regis Philbin Is Leaving ‘Live! with Regis and Kelly’

Regis Philbin announced that after 28 years this will be his last season hosting the morning show Live! with Regis and Kelly.

“It’s been a long time, it’s been 28 years since I’ve been here. And it was the biggest thrill of my life,” Philbin, 79, said on Live! Tuesday morning. “Everything must come to an end for certain people on camera, especially certain old people.”

Philbin’s morning talk show began local in New York City titled The Morning Show in 1983. He co-hosted The Morning Show with Cyndy Garvey for two years. In 1985, Kathie Lee Gifford replaced Garvey and the show, which was renamed Live! with Regis and Kathie Lee, went national in 1988. After 15 years, Gifford left the show and it became Live with Regis. Current co-host Kelly Ripa replaced Gifford in 2001 and the show was renamed once again to Live! with Regis and Kelly

“I think I can only speak for America, and all of us here, when I say it has been a pleasure and a privilege and a dream come true [working with you],” Ripa said to Philbin on Tuesday’s show. “And I wish I could do something to change your mind.”

Disney-ABC Domestic Television said in a statement that it will appoint a new co-host for Ripa, who will celebrate 10 years with the show next month.

Who do you think will be Philbin’s replacement?
