After winning Best New Artist over Justin Bieber at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards last night, many are asking, who is Esperanza Spalding?
The 26 year-old Jazz musician, who is the first jazz artist to win the Grammy category Best New Artist, beat out mainstream music stars Justin Bieber, Drake, Florence + the Machine and Mumford & Sons for the award. So what makes Spalding stand out over the other nominees in this category?
Spalding is not only a singer, but also a bassist and composer. She has performed at the White House, at the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony and Concert and was also part of a tribute to Prince at the 2010 BET Awards. In 2010, Spalding was the subject of an in-depth profile in The New Yorker and was also featured in the May 2010 Anniversary issue of O, The Oprah Magazine’s “Women on the Rise.”
Spalding was surprised and said she felt very lucky to win a Grammy for Best New Artist.
“I certainly did not expect to even be considered for that type of nomination,” she said. “Me being a little old jazz musician and everything.”
