When actor Arnold Schwarzenegger and broadcast journalist Maria Shriver announced their divorce last week, many suspected something major had happened to cause a split after 25 years of marriage. Those who were suspicious were right – Los Angeles Times is reporting that the couple separated after Shriver was informed that Schwarzenegger had a child with another woman while they were married.
Schwarzenegger, 63, and Shriver, 55, released a statement last week announcing their separation, saying, “After a great deal of thought, reflection, discussion, and prayer, we came to this decision together.”
According to Los Angeles Times, Shriver moved out of the couple’s Brentwood mansion after Schwarzenegger told her he had a child with a longtime female member of their household staff over a decade ago. That female employee reportedly retired in January after working for the Schwarzenegger family for 20 years.
In a statement to the newspaper Monday, Schwarzenegger said, “After leaving the governor’s office I told my wife about this event, which occurred over a decade ago. I understand and deserve the feelings of anger and disappointment among my friends and family. There are no excuses and I take full responsibility for the hurt I have caused. I have apologized to Maria, my children and my family. I am truly sorry.”
He added: “I ask that the media respect my wife and children through this extremely difficult time. While I deserve your attention and criticism, my family does not.”
Shriver and Schwarzenegger have four children, ages 14, 18, 20 and 21.
