With Steve Tyler announcing his departure from American Idol this week and buzz that Jennifer Lopez will not be returning, rumors that singer Mariah Carey may join the show have started.
“She’s in play,” an insider tells People. “They are in serious talks.”
Tyler announced Thursday that he was quitting American Idol after judging for two seasons.
“After some long … hard … thoughts … I’ve decided it’s time for me to let go of my mistress American Idol before she boils my rabbit,” Tyler said in a statement Thursday. “I strayed from my first love, Aerosmith, and I’m back – but instead of begging on my hands and knees, I got two fists in the air and I’m kicking the door open with my band.”
Buzz of Jennifer Lopez not returning to the Fox singing competition began in May after an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
“I enjoy it. I really do enjoy it,” Lopez told Ellen DeGeneres in May. “I miss doing other things. It really does lock you down.”
Randy Jackson is currently the only original judge left on the show.
